American bison. It is the iconic mammal of the USA. From a height of 1.5 to 2 meters, the males can reach up to 1,000 kg. When the British settlers arrived, their population exceeded 50 million heads. Decimated by an outrageous hunt, they had to fast disappear at the end of the 19th century. Protected in national parks, there would be about 500,000 today.
