The Maiden Tower. This fortified tower in the “Old City” of Baku, Azerbaijan, is an important component of the city’s seafront. The tower is built on a cliff, covered with freestone and protected by a rampart with a structure of semi-circular protrusions, rising from the foot almost to the top. Its name probably comes from the fact that the tower has never been invaded. It was built in two stages, the first dating back to the pre-Islamic era. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the tower served as a lighthouse.<\/p>\n<\/div>
