Lautoro on horseback. Iconic cacique of the Mapuche, Amerindian people settled in south-central Chile. Born in 1534, he is undoubtedly the most famous of the Mapuche chiefs who opposed the Spaniards on their arrival in Chile. Witnesses of the atrocities committed by the conquistadors, he takes up arms against them. He was finally captured and killed in 1557 following the betrayal of a native.<\/p>\n<\/div>
