Main gate of the A-Ma Temple. Dedicated to the Chinese sea-goddess Mazu, it is located in the district of S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o and was built in 1488. It is one of the oldest temples in Macao and thought to be the settlement’s namesake. When the Portuguese sailors reached the coast in front of the temple and asked the name of the place, the natives replied “A-maa-gok” (the Pavilion of the Mother).<\/p>\n<\/div>
