Green sea turtle. In Tokelau, sea turtles, especially the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), are culturally deeply ingrained “sacred fish” (ika ha) that are traditionally shared within the “Inati system.” They nest from September to November and inhabit the lagoons and outer reefs of the three atolls (Atafu, Nukunonu, Fakaofo), which serve as important feeding grounds. The green sea turtle is the most common, while the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is less numerous and nests mainly on Nukunonu.<\/p>\n<\/div>
