Coat of arms with the Grimaldi arms supported by a soldier monk. This Franciscan monk is inspired by Francesco Grimaldi, a character who has become legendary in Monaco, considered to be the founder of the principality. On January 8, 1297, he seized the Genoese fortress of the Rock of Monaco. He disguises himself as a Franciscan monk asking for asylum for the night in order to enter it, before opening the doors overnight to his soldiers.<\/p>\n<\/div>
