Criollo horse. This breed dates back to a shipment of 100 pure bred Spaniard horses brought over in 1535. In 1540, some horses were released into the wild, and 40 years later the feral horse population was estimated to be around 12,000. Four centuries later, natural selection has produced a hardy horse breed capable of surviving in extreme heat and cold weather, with little water, and living off dry grasses. The Criollo are used as draft animals and for pleasure riding.
