Cow fights. These are fights between several Hérens cows, taking place in the canton of Valais, where this practice is considered a living Swiss tradition. The Hérens cow is known for its spirited temperament and robust build, and fights occur naturally within the herds to establish a hierarchy by pushing each other with their heads and horns. Injuries are rare during these confrontations. A cow is defeated when it turns away from her opponent or refuses to fight as a sign of submission. At the end of the contest, the “queen” of the herd is chosen.
