Sultan Haji Sir Hassanal Bolkiah Muizadin Waddaulah. Born in 1946, he was crowned Sultan of Brunei on 1 August 1968 and succeeded his father Omar Ali Saifuddien III. He has ruled as an absolute monarch since 1984, following the country’s independence from Great Britain.
