Corvettes “Vostok” and “Mirnij”. The first Russian Antarctic expedition, organized by Tsar Alexander I, took off on July 16, 1819, led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, an Estonian-born Baltic German who discovered Antarctica. After a total of 751 days, the two ships returned to Kronstadt.
