Plain camels. With around 800,000 head, Mauritania has the largest camel herd in the Sahel. It is thanks to camels that the Mauritanian Sahara could be occupied and exploited by a nomadic society. Thus were able to develop north-south trans-Saharan exchanges with their endless caravans of salt, tea, sugar, cotton goods, etc.
