Mayan ballplayer. The ballgame is characteristic of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies and was a sport with ritual and warlike connotations, played from 1400 BC. The ballgame was more of a ceremonial ritual than a sport and probably represented the symbolic recreation of the mythical combat between night and day. The ball for the game was made of liquid latex extracted from rubber trees. The weight of the ball varied between 3 and 5 kilos.
