Caraba, Spanish caravel from the end of the 15th century. They were used by the Spanish and the Portuguese for the voyages of exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries, in the Age of Discovery and were the first ships in which the Europeans crossed the Atlantic. They were built according to the carvel method, which meant that instead of overlapping, the planks butted edge to edge, giving the hull a relatively smooth surface.
