Pigeon (鳩 / Hato). In Japan, they symbolize many things, including being messengers for the Shinto deity Hachiman, but also representing parental love and filial piety because they care for their elderly parents. They are considered sacred and have been venerated in art and at shrines since ancient times, appearing in paintings, sculptures, and as a motif on votive tablets. The Minamoto clan has the dove as a symbol on their war standard.
