Marten (Kuna in Croatian) in front of a checkerboard pattern. This motif is reminiscent of the previous Croatian currency, the Kuna, which goes back to the medieval use of marten fur as fur money in what is now Croatia. Martens are distributed almost worldwide and inhabit a variety of habitats, such as temperate and boreal forests.
