Least weasel. Known in Maltese as “ballotra”, it is the only native land-dwelling carnivore on the island of Malta. It is a rare and very shy subspecies of the least weasel. It is found in rural areas, old dry-stone walls, and fields, where it hunts small rodents such as mice. Sightings in the wild are extremely rare due to its secretive nature.
