Violin. A musical instrument belonging to the bowed string family, this instrument occupies a prominent place in Western classical music. It is estimated that the violin originated in the 1520s near Milan, Italy. The first luthier to have crafted a violin is believed to be Giovan Giacomo Dalla Corna or Zanetto Montichiaro. The violin then spread rapidly throughout Europe, both as a popular instrument in the streets and as one favored by the nobility.
