Chief Tibiriçá. Dead in 1562, he was an important Amerindian leader, chief of the Tupiniquim people of Piratininga and other tribes. Ally of the Portuguese from the start of the colonization of Brazil, he converted to Christianity under the name Martim Afonso and became a startegic ally and protector of the Jesuits. He had a predominant role in the founding of the city of São Paulo in 1554.
