Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. In many ways, it is a symbol of the city and one of the oldest Christian buildings in Paris. This is primarily due to the earlier structure, built between 540 and 550, upon which Notre-Dame Cathedral was erected starting in 1163. Constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries, Notre-Dame Cathedral underwent a major restoration in the 19th century under the direction of the renowned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Today, it is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
