Belém Tower. Built between 1514 and 1519 on a basaltic surface within the water, some distance from the north bank of the Tagus river, to defend the estuary and guard the Jerónimos Monastery as well as the port of Lisbon. Today it is a world symbol of the city of Lisbon and Portugal. The tower was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
