White silk cotton tree or kapok. The oldest of its kind in the country is located in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. According to legend, the tree gained importance in 1792 when a group of formerly enslaved people settled the site of what is now Freetown. It’s native to Mexico, Central America and northern South America, and West Africa. The tree and the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods are commonly known in English as kapok.
