Brown hare. This masterpiece of German Renaissance art, Albrecht Dürer’s “Young Hare” (1502) is one of the first pure nature studies to stand as a finished painting. Although the exact circumstances of the work’s creation remain unclear, one story suggests that Dürer found the sick hare while out for a walk. He took it home with him, which explains why the hare poses so calmly for the artist. Even the window frame is reflected in the animal’s eyes.
