Everest (Sagarmāthā in Nepalese, Qomolangma in Tibetan). With an altitude of 8848 meters it is the highest peak in the world. Everest is a holy mountain for the Sherpas, an ethnic group that migrated from Tibet to northeastern Nepal about 500 years ago. New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing Norgay were the first to reach the summit in 1953.
