Liberty Bell. On July 8, 1776, the copper and tin bell, now known as the “Liberty Bell” weighing over 2,000 pounds, rang out on the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, inviting citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Today the bell serves as a national symbol of the USA and as part of Independence Hall it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
