Badminton shuttlecock. Badminton is a court or lawn game played with lightweight rackets by two opposing players (singles) or two pairs (doubles). Its origins can be traced to ancient Greece, China, and India, where a similar game called battledore and shuttlecock was played. In the 1860s, British army officers in India played a version of the game called “poona,” which evolved into modern badminton. The first All England Open Badminton Championships, the world’s first badminton tournament, were held in 1899.
