Tennis ball and net. The origin of tennis probably lies in northern French monasteries of the High Middle Ages. Modern lawn tennis was invented in Great Britain in the 1870s and first spread to Europe, the USA and the colonies of the British Empire. Dropped from the program after the 1924 Summer Olympics, tennis was reinstated at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
